Hazard class · Division guide
Toxic / Poison (Class 6.1) Storage
Class 6.1 covers toxic substances that can cause serious harm through inhalation, ingestion, or absorption. Many also carry a subsidiary flammable or corrosive hazard.
Class, Division, and GHS meaning
In DOT nomenclature, Class 6 is toxic/infectious materials and Division 6.1 is poisonous materials. When a chemical is listed as “Class 6.1, Division 3,” Class 6.1 is the primary hazard and Division/Class 3 usually signals a flammable-liquid subsidiary risk. Storage must address both.
Storage implications for rental buildings
Prioritize containment, access control, and segregation from food, incompatible chemicals, and high-occupancy areas. If the material is also flammable, choose fire-rated hazmat storage sized for the primary toxic risk and the fire load.
